It derives from the Gaelic O' Tighearnaigh, meaning the grandson or male descendant of Tighearnach, the latter translating as lord or master. Traditionally Irish family names are taken from the heads of tribes, revered elders, or from some illustrious warrior, and are usually prefixed by O' or Mac, denoting "son of". This surname is especially widespread in County Galway, whereas the earliest recording is found in County Limerick in the early 18th Century (see below). I note with surprise that you are using my family Armorial on your website. I would kindly ask that you remove this immediately. This is my personal family arms and was granted to my ancestor Matthew Tierney and thence to his brother Edward. It is the Armorial of Thy Ó Tighearnaigh of Fearann Ó Tighearnaigh. I do not want to take the matter further but I can do so should you not remove this patented Armorial immediately.
