SCULLY Family History
This is an Anglicized form of the Old Gaelic name "O' Scolaidhe" or "O' Scolaire". The Gaelic prefix "O" indicated "male descendant of", plus "Scolaide", a Crier, i.e. one whose duty it was to announce important forthcoming events, or "Scolaire", a student. Originally a Co. Westmeath Clan, the Scullys were driven by Anglo-Norman pressure to Munster, circa 1170. One branch of the family settled in Lorrha (North Tipperary), and another established itself in South Tipperary, near Cashel. Clan members were interred by the famous Rock of Cashel and have a memorial there called Scully's Cross. Today, the name is widespread in Counties Cork and Tipperary...Select Audience

Jacob Scully
My 3rd great grand father was Daniel Scully. Landed in New York in 1851, before moving up state to Malone in Franklin County. Married a McGrath girl and moved to Canada to join another Scully family in Mount St. Patrick. The existing Scully family (came to Canada in 1842-43) was always said to related but no proof has ever been found. The only suggestions found are that Daniel's children had the other Scully family's listed as God parents, which was usually a title given to a family member in Irish traditions. It's believed he came from Limerick, as the other Scully's have had records found in the Kilcornan area.

Hi. I married a Scully in 1986. I am also researching this side of our tree. Simon Scully is my husbands 2 x ggfather born c 1856 somewhere in Ireland. His DNA suggests Leinster. Once Simon leaves Ireland, I have a large paper trail in Widnes, Lancashire, England, to include his marriage cert, census, children's baptisms etc. I have found a damaged bap. record in Ireland c. 1855, to a family in Celbridge Kildare, Michael Scully (who is named as his Father on his marriage cert) and Mary Connor (Mother unknown not confirmed) It could be Simon but I dont know how to prove it. I have also found all his potential siblings baptisms in Celbridge.

My Scully's arrived in New York & landed in Brooklyn's 10 ward & 3rd District in 1852. The Father was James (B1813-1817) and Mother was Catherine (B b1817-1818) In the 1860 UScensus they listed 6 Children. My Great Grandfather Patrick (B 1839) Thomas (B 1842) James (B 1844) all in Ireland. Then Richard (B 1856) Dennis (B 1857) and Mary (B 1859) in Brooklyn, NY After the 1860 Census available information on them has been extremely sparse at best. So if your Scully is from Brooklyn we just might be connected if any of the above matches your information,
Good Luck Jim
