SAUNDERS Family History

This famous surname of either English or Greek derivation has truly ancient origins. The name in its various spellings has long been accepted as being a derivative of the Greek personal name 'Alexander' which was recorded from 2000 B.C., but it is now certain that for many nameholders, the origin is Olde English and locational from Sanderstead in Surrey. This latter place was recorded in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicles of the year 871 a.d as 'Sondenstede' - the house on the sandy land. The Grecian 'Alexander' translates as "Defender of Men", a meaning which contributed greatly to its world wide popularity...

I am looking for my family ancestors and history in Ireland. George Saunders, of "Tubber-Dunlevin" County Wicklow, Ireland. George married Eaily Jackson of County Kildare, Ireland. They had four children before emiigrating to New Zealand from Liverpool in 1860. I am the Gt. Gt Grandaughter of George and Eaily Saunders. I think George's father was William Jackson Saunders and this is also the name of my Gt. Grandfather, George and Eaily's son.

He had two brothers, Samuel (Thomas' twin who died as a baby) and Robert (doctor/missionary in Rhodesia). Thomas arrived in South Africa in 1848 an got married in 1852 to Hannah Maria Falmouth Way (1852 - 6/7/1890). They had 6 children of whom the 2nd son, John Saunders (22/8/1860 - 2/8/1935) was my great grandfather.
