MULLANY Family History
Recorded as O' Mullaney, Mullany, Mullaney, and possibly others, this is a relatively rare Irish surname. Originally O'Mulleena and O'Molina, the latter it is said, being found in the place name Crossmolina in County Mayo, as well as Ballymullany in County Sligo, the origination is the pre 10th century Gaelic O' Maelenaigh. This is believed to have the meaning of the male descendant of the follower of St Seanach, an 8th century holy man. This meaning is disputed although nobody seem to have come up with an accepted alternative.Select Audience

I have a weird story. My grandfather was James Mullany born in Irishtown Claremorris County Ireland I believe. He emigrated to the US in the 1920's. In 1982 I met my now husband. His grandfather was Richard Mullaney from county Sligo in Ireland. We realized we both had a grandmother living who had married a man named Mullany/Mullaney. We used to tease each other that we were cousins. Someone in the family told us that the Mullany people of Mayo and Sligo were the same family split due to a feud generations ago. Would love to learn more about the group.
