MCGUIGAN Family History

Of all the Irish surnames, none has more variations of spelling than this one. In the most recent census it is said that there are only about fifteen hundred nameholders, who between them have over twenty different ways of spelling the name! This would not be so bad if there could be an consensus of agreement on what the name actually means, but there isnt. Many Irish or Gaelic names are patronymic, and this is one of them, and it is probable that the suffix Giugan is a nickname, and probably a development of a Norse-Viking personal name such as 'Uig'.

My mother is a McGuigan and her Great-great Grandfather, James McGuigan, was born about 1816 and we think in County Tyrone. He was in Vermont USA at the time of the 1840 US Census.

    Dia dhaoibh McGuigans,

I seek communication with individuals who's McGuigan family had roots at the end of the Cooley Peninsula (Maddoxland/Ballynamore/Carlingford area) at the beginning of the 19th century. Specifically, I seek the family of Catherine McUigan who is alleged to have married one Hugh Connor?? in the described area in the early years of that century.
    Kind regards,

    Peter Whitson???
