MCAULIFFE Family History

This interesting surname derives from the Gaelic "MacAmhlaoiibh", "Mac" meaning son of plus "Amhlaoibh" an Old Irish personal name meaning "relic of the gods". The name is almost peculiar to County Cork and is scarcely found outside Munster. The M(a)cAuliffe's are a branch of the M(a)cCarthy's and their chief resided at Castle M(a)cAuliffe near Newmarket, County Cork. Julia McAuliffe married William Riordan on February 5th 1799 at Killarney, County Kerry and on December 22nd 1799, John, son of Cornelius and Elizabeth McAuliffe, was christened at Kilshanning by Mallow, County Cork. Jeremiah McAuliffe, a labourer, aged 22 yrs., departed from Cork harbour as a famine immigrant on June 2nd 1846, bound for New York...

    Michael Charles McAuliffe

My great grandfather was Corneillius McAuliffe, his father was Florence McAuliffe. When his father passed in the early 1800's, he was sent to Canada to live with his uncle Corneillius.

His uncle had come to Canada with the Peter Robinson settlers durring the famine. They settled in the area of Peterborough, Ontario.
He married Margret O'Sullivan-Whaley, and they lived in Harwood, Ontario, where they raised their family.
My grandfather William Corneillius, moved back to Peterborough, and married Mary Maude Lynch.???

Out of interest, I did a search for books written about the McAuliffe clan, both in Ireland and worldwide. There are a few well-known people, but mostly lots of very interesting people and stories to be told. As well as reasearching my own family, I am an author, and I would like to make this my next project - a book about the McAuliffe's. It should contain lots of family trees, stories of real people, their travels across the world, their dark days of famine, their success in modern life. I'm happy to write this book, it would be nice to see how much support there is out there for such a book, would it be popular?

I imagine that our McAuliffe’s probably originated in Cork but haven’t been able to go back that far in our tree. Our first McAuliffe was just across the border in Kerry in Brosna and Knockbrack, Knocknagoshel ca 1836 Timothy possibly son of Dennis McAuliffe.
