My gg grandfather was named John Michael Mitchell Hayden fled Massachusetts during the civil war dropped his last name dyed his red hair black to not serve in the military.he was a blacksmith and hid out in ky. During the war I was told he shooed horses for both sides.his brother stayed in mass.and was angry with him,he married in ky so my mom's family were known as Mitchel's,he was Catholic so since there were few priests in ky we became baptists such a strange story, some men could pay 300$ or get someone to take their place in the war
