GILROY Family History
This interesting surname, established in Scotland and Northern Ireland from an early date, is an Anglicized form of the Gaelic "Mac Giolla Ruaidh", composed of the element "Mac", son of, "giolla", servant of, youth, and "ruaidh", red (haired); hence, "son of the red (haired) youth". The sept originated in County Fermanagh where the placename Ballymackilroy is found: their territory was on the east side of Lough Erne. There is another Ballymackilroy in County Tyrone and a Ballymacilroy in County Antrim. Traditionally, Irish family names are taken from the heads of tribes, revered elders, or from some illustrious warrior, and are usually prefixed by "O", grandson, male descendant, or "M(a)c", denoting "son of"...Select Audience

Gilroy
I live in Nebraska and am searching for information on my Gilroy heritage. The story I know is that two Gilroy brothers planned to leave Ireland bound for America. One brother apparently boarded a ship headed to Australia by accident. I think my relatives settled in Pennsylvania before some found themselves in Nebraska. My great grandfather's name was Edward.
Patrick Gilroy
My Grand Father was James GIlroy from BallyShannon, Ireland. He came to the States in 1840 more or less. He first settled in New York and in 1854 moved to Iowa and homesteaded the family farm. He helped at least one brother, Patrick and a sister Bridget come over also. As far as I know he never heard from either once he sent the cost for the tickets in.
