CONLON Family History

This surname is of Medieval Irish origin and is, along with Conlan, synonymous with (O)Connellan, pronounced almost alike, with the spellings Conlon and Conlan being the more modern forms. Several different Irish surnames have been Anglicized as Conlon, the principal septs so called in English are, O'Conallain, of Roscommon and Galway, and O'Coinghiollain of County Sligo, with present day representatives found also in County Meath where they are sometimes called Quinlan, (O'Coindealbhain, in Irish), and descend from an important sept near Trim, which traces back to Laoghaire, King of Ireland circa 432. During the 17th Century the name was very numerous and widespread, and appears in seven variant spellings...

    Dr. Mary Jo Purcell

My Grandmother was born in Ireland in County Roscommon. My memory is getting old, as am I, so I think they lived in Rathnarelleigh. She came to the USA to be a domestic servant and she lived with/near the oldest brother, Patrick Conlon, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The other place where the family could have lived was Ballintu/obber. She was the first to come to the USA; others followed. They were the children of James Ryan and Celia Conlon Ryan.

My Great Grandfather was James J. Conlin, born 1870 he married Catherine Russell born 1881. They immigrated to America. I can find nothing of their history in Ireland. They had 9 children: John, Grace, Catherine M, Agnes, William, Helen, James, Mary and Rita. The children were born in the US. They lived in Boston. My grandmother was Grace. She married Roy Thomas Walsh and later Joseph V. Kelly. The US records use the C-o-n-l-i-n spelling. Records show James J. Conlin immigrated in 1889 and Catherine Russell immigrated in 1898. I am trying to trace them to their roots in Ireland but have gotten nowhere. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Karen Conlon Torres

My great Great Grandfather was James Conlon, a stonemason and labourer. He married Mary Anne McParland in the R.C.Parish Church in Ballymore parish, County Armagh. They migrated to Australia in 1854. They lived in Clarendon, near Adelaide South Australia and had a family of 13 children, not all survived. I have not been able to trace James and Mary Annes birth dates or baptism sites. Would like to know more if someone can assist ?
