MCCROSSAN Family History
This fine Irish name is an Anglicized form of the Old Gaelic "Mac an Chrosain". The Gaelic prefix "mac" means "son of", plus the personal byname "Crosan", rhymer; hence, "son of the rhymer". This name was borne by two distinct septs, the one belonging to Tir Chonailll (Co. Donegal), and the other to the Leinster counties of Laois and Offaly. Richard Mac Crossan of the Donegal sept was Bishop of Raphoe in that county towards the end of the 14th Century. Present day representatives are widely found in the bordering Counties Tyrone and Derry, but in the latter place, the prefix "mac" has, to a large extent, been dropped.Select Audience

I have stumbled across your website and am hoping that someone will be able to help me. My enquiry is regarding Teresa Philomena McCrossan born I believe in the January quarter of 1922 at Ballyshannon, County Donegal who married Edwin George Simmons on 30 June 1941 in Greenock, Renfrewshire, Scotland. She was 19 when she married him according to her marriage certificate. I have also come across a further birth record for Philomena McCrossan born July quarter 1945 in Delvin, Ireland who I believe could be a further child of Teresa Philomena McCrossan. Does this tie in with anyone's family tree please. I can find no death records for either McCrossan mentioned nor can I trace any death records for Teresa's mother and father listed as Mary and Harry McCrossan, both deceased at the time of her marriage but her father is listed as a flax worker. If anyone could help shed any light on this I would be very grateful.
