MAHER Family History

The Irish surname Meagher (and the variations) comes from the Gaelic "O' Meachair" meaning the "descendent of the kind and hospitable Chief".

My father was born Harry Edward Maher jr. He has always told me of our family coming from Ireland. I know his father was Harry Edward Maher Sr and his wife was Bertha (Porter, maiden name)I don't really know to much more than that and have always been interested in finding my family history.

My 2nd great grandfather, Michael Maher was born  Nov 1, 1821 in County Roscommon, Ireland. (This is listed on his son's death certificate).  He came to the United States in about 1850. His siblings also came, Thomas born 1825, and sister, Margaret born 1835. We were told his parents were Thomas and Mary (Nealon) Maher, that they stayed behind in Ireland. Would love any information on this family, especially where they lived in Ireland.

I know little about family ancestors. My Grandfather was Timothy Lawrence Maher born about January 1860 in Blairsville,Pennsylvania,USA He was orphaned about age 6, had an older half sister named Maggie O'Neil whose mother was Mary Henry O'Neil. Anything else before that is supposition. email tlm414@comcast.net
