Recorded in many spellings as shown below, this very interesting surname is usually English, but may also be Irish, although the origins are the same. It is almost certainly for most nameholders topographical, and would have originally described someone who lived in a house or cottage in a nook or corner of land, or a bend in a river. If so the derivation is from the Old English word 'hyrne', or the later Middle English 'herne'. When my 4th great grandfather, Robert Thomas Hearn was born on January 1, 1734, in Dublin, Dublin, Ireland, his father, Venerable Daniel Hearn Esq., was 41 and his mother, Anne Dowley, was 24. He married Frances "Fanny" Cooksey/ Colclough and they had two children together. He then married Juliet Frances Fleming and they had seven children together. He died in 1792 in Westmeath, Ireland, at the age of 58.
