COCHRANE Family History

This famous Scottish name, with the variations Cochrane, Cochran, Cochern and Colqueran, is locational and derives from the "Lowlands of Cochrane", near Paisley in Renfrewshire. There has hardly been a period in Scottish and English history when the Cochrane's have not been prominent. Robert Cochrane, Earl of Mar (d. 1482) was a favourite of King James 111, whilst Sir John Cochrane (c. 1650) was a Royalist Commander of Charles 1 and Governor of Towcester in 1644, whilst Thomas Cochrane, 10th Earl of Dundonald (1775-1860) was an Admiral in the Royal Navy until driven out for exposing naval corruption. In 1817 he commanded the Chilean Navy and secured independence from Spain...

Hi - I have been researching my family ancestry for years and keep coming up against confusing data about my 3rd Great Grandparents William James Cochrane, born 1808, Fintona, County Tyrone and Mary Jane Coughran - also from Fintona.  They emigrated to Australia in 1851 during the potato famine.? Where it gets confusing is that a lot of records both state they had the same parents (Coughran and Cochrane seem to be interchangeable) - ?David A Cochrane / Coughran (b 1790 Downpatrick, Down) and Elizabeth "Betsy" Cotter (b 1785, Tyrone). I "think" Mary's parents may actually be William Coughran (b 1775 Drumwhisker, Concavey, Co Tyrone) and Anne Thomnpson (b 1779 Fintona).  If anyone has any records or history that can confirm their parentage, I would really appreciate it.??
